Letter from Art Hilgart
We began Broadway Revisited in 1991, to share the pleasure we've had over the decades from the superior popular songs that constitute one of our significant national art forms, and because the field is an appropriate complement to jazz and other classics on public radio. Another reason is to honor the past and present creators of the form and help keep their contributions alive. We've been pleased by the response from listeners who enjoy the music as much as we do.

When I was four years old, my parents took me to see "The Student Prince", and I've been interested and peripherally involved with the theater ever since, including service on boards associated with theater programs at Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University and as president of the award-winning Kalamazoo Civic Players. We have file drawers filled with Playbills of the shows we've seen on Broadway and elsewhere, and a comprehensive record collection covering the beginning of the recording era through the current Broadway season. On each program I try to select the best available recordings of superior songs.

My wife and I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where we monitor the circumstances of our sons, a university teacher and a political consultant. My main profession is economics, as corporate executive and writer, but music has been a lifelong constant. If public radio did not already fill the need, I might be doing a jazz program. (I teach courses in both jazz history and musical theater history at Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University, write CD liner notes, and regularly review jazz for The Journal of the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors.) Although I've studied music, I can't play well enough to amuse anyone but myself.

Cordially,

Art Hilgart
